This was Portugal's 4th appearance in the Quarter-final stage of a UEFA EURO tournament: they previously reached this stage in 1984, 1996 and 2000.
This tournament continued Portugal's positive performances at the EUROs, thus far reaching the knock-out stage on each occasion they qualified for a tournament.
This was the second time Portugal and England met at a (EURO) tournament, in both instances Portugal came from one or two goals down to go on and win the match! Resilience.
This is the match that made me fall in love with A Seleção das Quinas! It was a thrilling end-to-end match, we came back from a goal down thanks to Postiga; we nearly sealed victory at the end through Rui Costa only for Lampard to force penalties. My heart was in my mouth. Beckham misses! We have the advantage. Then Rui Costa misses... After Postiga makes 5-5, it's sudden death. Ricardo takes his keeper gloves off, like an ABSOLUTE badass and stops Vassell's penalty with his BARE HANDS... Then he proceeds to take the sixth penalty and... HE SCORES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
